For the woman who’s talked about it a hundred times and still feels stuck.
Maybe you’ve been in therapy before. You understand where the pain comes from. You can explain it clearly. And yet the heaviness, the numbness, or the sudden waves of panic keep coming back.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not doing therapy wrong. Some experiences, especially trauma, are stored in parts of the brain and body that talking alone doesn’t always reach. That’s where brainspotting can help. At Deserts Bloom Therapy in Chandler, AZ, we offer brainspotting for women healing from trauma and depression.
What is brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a brain-body therapy developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. It’s built on a simple idea: where you look affects how you feel.
During a session, your therapist helps you find a “brainspot,” an eye position connected to a strong emotional or physical response. By holding your gaze on that spot while staying present with what comes up, your brain gets space to process experiences that may have felt stuck for years.
Brainspotting is gentle and client-led. You don’t have to retell every detail of what happened. Your nervous system sets the pace, and your therapist stays attuned with you the whole time.
How trauma and depression live in the body
Trauma isn’t only a memory. It can show up as tension you can’t release, exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix, or a sense of being on guard even when you’re safe.
Depression often travels alongside it. Many women describe feeling flat, disconnected, or like they’re watching their life from the outside. When the nervous system has been in survival mode for a long time, shutting down can become its way of coping.
Brainspotting works with these deeper, body-based responses. Instead of trying to think your way out of what you feel, it gives your brain and body a chance to release what they’ve been holding.
Why women may find brainspotting helpful
So many women carry trauma quietly. You keep the household running, show up at work, and take care of everyone else, often with no space left to feel what you’ve been through.
Brainspotting can be a good fit because:
- You don’t have to find the perfect words. Healing can happen even when an experience is hard to describe.
- It respects your pace. You stay in control of what you explore and how deep you go.
- It reaches what talk therapy may not. Many clients find it helps with patterns that have stayed stuck despite insight.
- It works alongside other approaches. Brainspotting can be combined with CBT, ACT, DBT, and other trauma-informed care.
Every woman’s healing looks different, and brainspotting is one tool among many. Research on it is still growing, so we’ll talk openly about whether it fits your goals.
What a brainspotting session looks like
- Settling in. We start by talking about what’s on your mind and what you’d like to work on.
- Noticing. You bring to mind a feeling, memory, or body sensation and notice how strong it feels.
- Finding your brainspot. Using a pointer or your own natural gaze, we find the eye position where that feeling is most noticeable, or where you feel most grounded.
- Processing. You hold your gaze there while staying curious about whatever comes up. Some sessions feel quiet; others bring emotion or release.
- Grounding. We close by checking in and making sure you feel steady before you leave.
Sessions can happen in person at our Chandler office or virtually from home.
Is brainspotting right for you?
Brainspotting may be a good fit if you:
- Have experienced trauma, big or small, that still affects your daily life
- Feel stuck in depression, numbness, or disconnection
- Understand your story but still feel its weight in your body
- Struggle with anxiety, panic, or feeling constantly on edge
- Want a gentler approach that doesn’t require retelling everything
Not sure? That’s okay. We’ll explore your history and goals together and decide on the approach that feels right for you.
